A lifeline....

For people in Brunei who are addicted to Facebook and want to log onto it using their mobile (I think I'm one of the last few people in the country who hasn't already done this!), please go here and follow the instructions. The link is courtesy of my friend, June! Thanks, June dear! XD

"Nerdy is as nerdy does..."

Heh, a modified Forrest Gump quote... XD Anyway, Saima sent a forward a while back with comics about scientists and whatnot. Being a chemist and one who knows some physicists and mathematicians quite well (more relevant for the first comic strip!), these two comics brought a smile to my face and perhaps, a little chuckle. Hehe. I have forwarded the mail to several people but thought I'd share this on my blog. Not sure who the credits go to for them - if anyone has any idea, please let me know. For now, please enjoy! XD

I'm feeling "blue"???

Ack, I missed Rozi on MSN yet again! Being in Germany, I tend to be available for chat when most Bruneians are already in bed! But Rozi's a night owl, which is great for me because I get to talk about art things with her! Anyway, she left me an MSN message with a link to a fun quiz, the HTML colour quiz. It decides a colour based on one's personal traits, it's a very short quiz, so why not give a go. Anyway, I was unimpressed that I ended up being a colour I do not like, haha! Ah well...

you are aqua
#00ffff

Your dominant hues are green and blue. You're smart and you know it, and want to use your power to help people and relate to others. Even though you tend to battle with yourself, you solve other people's conflicts well.

Your saturation level is very high - you are all about getting things done. The world may think you work too hard but you have a lot to show for it, and it keeps you going. You shouldn't be afraid to lead people, because if you're doing it, it'll be done right.

Your outlook on life is very bright. You are sunny and optimistic about life and others find it very encouraging, but remember to tone it down if you sense irritation.

Is this for real?!

Well, I was visiting my favourite forum, and lo and behold, there was a post about free rice. So being the curious cat that I am, I decided to check it out! It's a charity website called FreeRice - there's a simple quiz where you are asked the meaning of a word (multiple choice questions, hehe) and for each answer you get right, you receive 10 grains of rice which will be distributed to those in need. Last night, I've managed to get 11000 grains, which from what I can gather from Google search, is about 1/2 pound of long-grain rice. Anyway, how is the rice paid for? Well, everytime a question is asked, there's a new ad at the bottom of the page, so the companies promoted in the ads are the ones who pay for the rice. Of course, I was still a little suspicious, so I checked it out - it was even commended on the BBC website (article)! So if anyone has a little spare time on the web now and again, please spend it on achieving some rice for charity! The link is here! :D

Ack, Meela tagged me!!!

So after wondering where Meela's gone to, she decided to blog-tag me, haha! Thanks, Meel! And welcome back! Anyway, in the name of fun, I've decided to play along, so here goes:

Blog tagging rules:
  1. Each blogger must post these rules.
  2. Each blogger starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
  3. Bloggers that are tagged need to write on their own blog about their eight things and post these rules. At the end of their blogs, they need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.
  4. Don't forget to leave them a comment telling them they've been tagged and to read your blog.
Eight random facts/habits about yours truly:
  1. I am a clean freak so beware, haha
  2. I am into manga and anime
  3. I hate all creepy crawlies (whoever thought of eating snails was crazy!!!)
  4. I am afraid of ghosts (no more horror films for me!)
  5. I hurt my back when I was a teenager while playing shot put, and now I'm suffering
  6. I love green tea ice cream
  7. I dream of marrying one of those gorgeous bishies, like the ones in manga and anime (sad, huh?!)
  8. I have a habit of procrastinating (need to break it!)
People I'm tagging:
  1. Haslann
  2. Rozi
  3. Yusri
  4. Nazim
  5. Dermot
  6. Vinny
  7. Gary
  8. Terry
By the way, it's not compulsory to react to the blog-tag. ;D Have fun!

How do they come up with these things?!

I had some brats... I mean, guests (haha!) staying over at our apartment in Berlin a few days back - a few cousins and their friends (will blog about them another day). Anyway, when not sightseeing or eating, they were constantly on the interweb (hmmm, sounds familiar, hehe) and some of the things that passed over the screen were rather comedic and interesting, mainly stuff on youtube. One of the things that caught my interest was a comedy act called the "Back Dorm Boys" set up by two Chinese guys, where they lip-sync to various songs. The first parody was done just for fun, but since so many youtube viewers liked it a lot, they kept making more, and now the duo have a 5-year contract with some Chinese talent agency! Talk about making it big! Anyway, here are some of their videos , in order of my most favourite:

"Peking Opera"

"Radio In My Head" (Motorola ad)

"A Public Affair"

"Bu De Bu Ai" ("Can't Help To Love")

The last video is rather disturbing, in a way, haha. But I like the song! Anyway, enjoy! ;D

I'm still learning! (ah, und Frohe Weihnachten!)

Right, I decided to take another self-understanding quiz, introduced to me by Rozi. ;D If you're interested in doing the quiz, please click on the following link: The Learning Styles Inventory Test

Anyway, here's what the test spitted out to me (Note: the scores are out of 20 for each style. A score of 20 indicates one uses that style often):

Styles Scores Memletics Styles Graph

Social 18

Logical 17

Verbal 17

Solitary 15

Aural 15

Visual 14

Physical 12

Haha, I don't know how these tests work, but somehow, they always seem rather accurate - I mean, I totally agree with my low score in the physical aspect. ;D

Overview of Learning Styles
Many people recognize that each person prefers different learning styles and techniques. Learning styles group common ways that people learn. Everyone has a mix of learning styles. Some people may find that they have a dominant style of learning, with far less use of the other styles. Others may find that they use different styles in different circumstances. There is no right mix. Nor are your styles fixed. You can develop ability in less dominant styles, as well as further develop styles that you already use well.

Using multiple learning styles and “multiple intelligences” for learning is a relatively new approach. This approach is one that educators have only recently started to recognize. Traditional schooling used (and continues to use) mainly linguistic and logical teaching methods. It also uses a limited range of learning and teaching techniques. Many schools still rely on classroom and book-based teaching, much repetition, and pressured exams for reinforcement and review. A result is that we often label those who use these learning styles and techniques as “bright.” Those who use less favored learning styles often find themselves in lower classes, with various not-so-complimentary labels and sometimes lower quality teaching. This can create positive and negative spirals that reinforce the belief that one is “smart” or “dumb.”

By recognizing and understanding your own learning styles, you can use techniques better suited to you. This improves the speed and quality of your learning.

The learning styles are:
  • Visual (spatial): You prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding.
  • Aural (auditory-musical): You prefer using sound and music.
  • Verbal (linguistic): You prefer using words, both in speech and writing.
  • Physical (kinesthetic): You prefer using your body, hands and sense of touch.
  • Logical (mathematical): You prefer using logic, reasoning and systems.
  • Social (interpersonal): You prefer to learn in groups or with other people.
  • Solitary (intrapersonal): You prefer to work alone and use self-study.

I am not perfect?!

Haha, did it sound like I thought I was? ;D Not at all! Hehe, I was just a little surprised at what the "Seven Deadly Sins" Quiz (which Meela introduced to me via her blog) spitted back at me! My worst sin is ENVY (though I agree with the Sloth and Gluttony results!)?! And this was just because I want a car like my friend's (a Mini) and that I don't like too much PDA! Ah well, as June said, can't take these things seriously, hehe. It's fun - try it! ;D

Greed:Low

Gluttony:Medium

Wrath:Low

Sloth:Medium

Envy:Medium

Lust:Very Low

Poll: Which genre(s) of book/film do you like?

Oooh, I've discovered a poll option!!! So I'm going to try it out! The question is as you see above and the poll can be found somewhere on the sidebar. It's set for a week - after that, I'll post the results here! Looking forward to your participation! ;D

ps: I discovered a slight glitch, when trying to change votes. So pick your answers (you can choose more than one answer when voting!) carefully before making the final vote, you only get ONE chance!

update (13/10/2007 - hari raya!)
so the results are as follows:
  • thriller - 3 votes
  • sci-fi - 2 votes
  • comedy - 2 votes
  • romance - 2 votes
  • fantasy - 1 vote
  • non-fiction - 1 vote
  • cult - 1 vote
  • horror - 0 votes

Movie: The Golden Compass

Okay, I'm chatting to June at the moment on gmail when the topic of movies came up - one of the films I'm dying to watch is "The Golden Compass", out on 7th December 2007! Anyway, on the official website (you can view it here), there's a quiz under the Daemons section, where you can find out what your daemon is - so June and I decided to do the test. Hehe, I was a little disappointed with mine - why? Because it's a dog - a DOG, of all things - an animal which I can't touch but don't actually dislike. So I shall be open-minded about this, and post it on my blog. The code actually gives an interactive display which allows people I know a chance to see if the personality of this Whippet daemon (named Cleon) is like mine - if you have time, why don't you give me your input (and June too - she posted hers on her blog!) and also, do the test so you can figure out what daemon is yours! Vielen Dank!

ps: when people start adding their input, the daemon may keep changing - this goes on for 12 days and then, the final daemon form will be decided on! I'm so much happier with my wolf form - that's the second form my daemon has morphed into. I wonder what my daemon will end up as!

DNA = Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid

Science at work?Haha, I got this from Aniki (Japanese nickname for my brother!). It's just a bit of fun, you have no need to register to get your visualDNA deciphered, hehe. Anyway, this is what they think of me:

I think my visualDNA is relatively accurate. Why don't you give it a go?

Kawaii emoticons!

Hehe, I was bored and since I've been spicing up my blog, I decided to add emoticons to it. I tried to find scripts for them to add to my raw html source, and the only compatible one I found had icons that were too big to go well with my font size. So I have decided to accomplish "Operation: Emoticons" via the hard way - writing raw html code everytime I want to add an emoticon, I guess the "copy and paste" trick helps as well, hehe! I have now uploaded the emoticons I've chosen onto my webserver. Here are the following emoticons I will use from now on:
smile
grin
wink
huh?
ack!
blush
cry
sad
mad
kiss
nyaaa!

Aren't they just kawaii (Japanese for "cute"!)?Hope you like them too!
